Decorating for a
Nautical Boy
Boy’s Room Captures
Flavor of the Sea
Taking a boy’s room from plain to
plain old fun can be as simple of
picking a theme. If there’s a
little sailor in your home, brighten
up his bedroom with a fun and
stylish nautical theme. Taking a
cue from every child’s love of the
beach and water, a nautical
bedroom will send any boy’s
imagination sailing.
Go for Deep Color
If the walls in your youngster’s bedroom are already light colored, such as white or ivory, go ahead and splurge on some new curtains and bed covers that are a deep navy blue. The dark colors will hide spots from little hands that play in the mud, and they make the bedroom have a restful feel by balancing out all the white on the wall. While you’re at the home store, pick up some pillows in assorted patterns that complement your other linens and artwork. If the walls already have color, then add a fresh coat of ivory-colored paint.
Accessories that say “SEA!”
It’s true about the little details making the room. Lamps for either side of the bed in this bedroom were painted to look like kerosene lanterns. The nice thing is that old kerosene lanterns can be found just about anywhere and with a couple of lamp kits and some new white shades, you can have instant charm and two new lamps to boot. Some lighting stores will even convert the kerosene lamps for you.
To perk up the shades, add some small coordinating trim around the bottoms of white lampshades. It will make the lamps look better and more finished. If you like, you can also add sea shells in the lanterns for an extra touch of ocean. Next, hang some artwork of ships, lighthouses, or other ocean-related items to round out the room’s ocean feel.
It’s the little things
Once the room is complete, add those all-important final touches. Small, tabletop accessories such as ships or lighthouses can be purchased at most décor stores. Scatter rugs in coordinating colors are also a nice touch even if the bedroom is already carpeted. Books about seafaring adventures and creatures of the ocean make fun bedside reading and spark curiosity about sailing, ocean life, and nautical fun.
Bedrooms boys love
Every boy loves adventure and a nautical bedroom will surely take a young man to exotic ports of call in his imagination. Picking a theme such as sailing, travel, or a particular sport puts the emphasis on his interests, too. Airplanes, wilderness, and safari themes are also fun ideas to spark an adventuresome spirit and lend themselves to all kinds of fun decorating ideas.
Take your little guy with you to pick out the things he likes the best. My son has a travel theme for his bedroom and when he was five we went together to pick out cars, old gas pumps, and antique postcard prints from around America to make his look complete. It was for his room but we both had fun doing this together.
So get out the paint and take your young man shopping soon. A boy’s room that sparks his imagination will create a warm memory, and untold numbers of adventures, for years to come.
