Make Your Own
Canopy Bed

Easy to Create &
Romantic, A Canopy
Bed is the Perfect
Gift for Mother’s Day

It happens at about age four for
little girls.  Whether it’s magnetic
attraction or activation of the
fairytale gene, almost every little
girl dreams of a canopy bed.  The
problem is that the dream of a
canopy bed never really goes away.
As little girls grow into women,
the interest in a canopy bed only
grows more sophisticated, moving
from frills and fairy-like details to
something more grown up and elegant.

With Mother’s Day right around the
corner, the gift of a canopy bed is
sure to please any Mom.  It would also make a great anniversary gift.  The nice thing about canopy beds is that they’re fairly easy to make, and they really make a statement in the bedroom.

Besides being attractive, a canopy bed also creates instant romance – something any couple would appreciate.  They’re usually quick to create, too.  Depending on the type and style of canopy you choose to create, you can make one in an afternoon.

Turn your bed into a canopy bed
A standard bed with a headboard can easily be converted into a canopy bed, and the canopy can be made any number of ways.  The traditional style is a full canopy that covers the entire bed, to a smaller cornice canopy that just hangs over the head of the bed.  Even rings attached to the ceiling at four corners can be draped with lengths of fabric or with curtain scarves to create a sleek, streamlined-looking canopy.

Three easy ways to create a canopy
One way to create a canopy bed is to install crown moulding on the ceiling.  Make sure the moulding is slightly larger than the actual bed so when curtains are attached, they’ll hang neatly at the sides of the bed.  This is a very elegant look.  Stain the moulding the same color as your furniture, and you’ll have a more custom, high-end look.

To create a full canopy, there are two methods.  The first method is to attach curtain rods to the ceiling.  This is quick, easy, and inexpensive.  For a more expensive look, and sturdier canopy, a plywood base is required.

First, purchase three quarter inch plywood and cut to size, again making it slightly larger than the bed.  You may need more than one piece.  Attach the plywood to the studs in the ceiling with screws or with wall anchors.  Then cover the plywood with batting and fabric, pulling the fabric taut and stapling at the sides with a heavy duty stapler.  Attach hook and loop tape at the four corners.

Next, curtains, either purchased or
made for this project, can be sewn
together if you’re using a drape with
a topper.  Add hook and look tape to
the curtains and then attach to the
plywood frame, and voila!, instant
canopy bed.

This canopy bed was created with curtain rods attached to the ceiling.  Choose lightweight fabrics if you use this method.  Heavier fabrics will do better when attached to a plywood base.
This bed shows how a canopy can be made with moulding.  Plain moulding is perfect for a more sophisticated or contemporary design.  Curtains can be attached to the moulding very easily to create a fuller, more traditional style.
