Ask anyone what their favorite color
is and time and again blue ranks up
there as everybody’s most admired hue.
Maybe because it’s the color of the sky
or maybe it’s because it reminds us of
our favorite ocean vacation spot.
Whatever it is, blue has a magnetic
pull on our decorating heartstrings.

Relaxing, comforting and charming, a
bedroom in blue is always a winner.
This bedroom is a perfect example of
the appeal of blue.  From the silk
shades on the lamps to the powder
blue on the walls, the room is
captivating with its classical and
elegant appeal.

Blue can go formal
The room is set with crisp white trim and buttercup yellow silk drapes and dust ruffle.  It’s the kind of room that anyone would want but not everyone could achieve.  That’s because blue can sometimes go overboard.  But not here.

Plaid buttercup and powder blue shams keep the room from becoming too stiff and formal.  Plaid is always the answer when a room begins to get too full of itself.  Why? Plaid helps tone down the formality and raises the level of casualness.  Plaid is never too stiff even when it’s silk.

The room color is also nicely contrasted with the dark wood furniture.  The dark cherry wood really pops out against the blue walls.  Crystal urns help to carry the crystal from the lamps to the other side of the room.  It’s always a good idea to try to “balance” a room by carrying ideas from one side to the other.  This is shown again in the drapes.  The yellow of the dust ruffle is picked up in the yellow drapes and is balanced with blue trim.  Dark wood curtain rods carry the dark wood of the furniture up on the walls.

Use blue with caution
Although blue colors are very traditional and very relaxing and easy to work with, there’s a downside to blue.  It’s important to know that blue can sometimes feel cold and depressing, especially if it’s a steely blue.  That’s why it’s a good idea to add a punch of warmth to keep the blue from becoming “too blue.”  Adding another color such as yellow, brown, or beige will balance out the coolness.  Brown with blue is a very trendy combination now, too.

Set the mood with blue
When you want to use blue in your decorating, determine the kind of mood you want to set.  If it’s comfort, a colonial blue color is always good.  For cottage colors, go with powdery or pale blues, if you want sophistication try a deep blue accent wall.  Contemporary designs should go with steely blues that emphasize the gray colors and pick up on silver accents.

Blue is always a good choice in a bedroom.  Because of its relaxing appeal and natural coolness, a pretty blue bedroom will inspire naps and long days of lounging with the paper and coffee in bed.  Give your bedroom a dose of blue if you want to create a relaxing haven.  You might just find yourself sleeping a little later and spending a little more time in bed.

Until next time, remember every space is a living space.
